I was touched throughout this book by the tenderness and care with which the author deals with each of her characters, and the importance of their relationships with each other. These relationships are built slowly and carefully, so that we feel such a part of their lives. In the end, I felt such sadness about leaving Marburg, Germany behind. But I also felt a sense that wherever the characters ended up, they would remain in each other's hearts and maybe someday reconnect. Life goes on and sometimes paths cross again, either physically or in our hearts. I highly recommend this wonderfully written book.

This was a really good read. I feel like I was there, in the fairytale village, witnessing all of the life stories unfolding at two distinct times. Very relatable for anyone, and especially for expats! Soaked it up!

The Birthing House sets several different time frames in the lives of its characters in order to explore loss, grief, friendship, and the joys and difficulties of new life. In one time frame, the narrator has just endured a miscarriage and the death of her father; and is struggling with her young family to adjust to a new life in Marburg, Germany—a new language, new school, new friends, the new life taking form in her body, new everything that cannot at first fill the spaces of what has been lost. In the second time frame, the narrator (her children having grown up and begun their own independent lives) returns to Marburg after twenty years to renew the new (now old) friendships. Both times are mediated and blurred by dreams (which feature the father prominently) and by an almost magical house (the house of the town’s midwife, where the narrator lives in the second time frame). Like the dreams, the house still contains everyone who ever lived there, and becomes a living witness to their lives. Watch out for Johann, another almost magical figure: an old, sad man who is drawn out of his sadness by his growing friendship with the narrator—and by the birthing house with its intimacies, for he too was born there. With his own history of courage and terrible loss, he brings the final element of magic: music, in the form of his violin, which he plays again for the first time, transcendently, in the birthing house and in the warmth of his new friendship with the narrator.

Filled with realistic and unforgettable characters, The Birthing House is a fascinating exploration of friendship, family and how human life is a continual process of creation and loss. A delightful and captivating read, The Birthing House is a tribute to Kathy Taylor’s creative storytelling skillset. Like the house in which much of the story takes place, page by page Kathy constructs and develops Clare Muller’s character stone by stone, timber by timber, window by window. And as the reader learns and gains insight into Clare’s life and her inner struggle, they simultaneously become educated about the history and processes of midwifery, as well as about the customs, mores, and daily life routines of German culture. Using a birthing house as a metaphor/allusion/allegory—they seem to overlap here—and giving birth to a book was a stroke of writing genius. Even though I clearly understood the symbiotic relationship between Clare’s pregnancy and her goal to write—give birth to—a book, being a man, I viewed the writing and its development in the context of a literal structural building process. All the parts of the house, from its foundation and timbers to the clay-straw mud—Lehm—exterior are there. Structurally, I was struck by how Kathy utilized a variety of devices—motifs—including dreaming, journaling, multiple languages with their unique perspectives and idioms, and Jungian psychology as ways for Clare to reveal herself. As an author myself, I found myself smiling when Clare, after citing multiple theorists about novel development, bemoaned how dense they could be. Like Clare, Kathy’s characters are authentic. The one that resonated the most with me is her son Willy. Watching him grow and mature added to the pleasure of reading. Little-boyness is a universal experience with which all men can identify. In several places, Willy stole the scene from his Mom through his innocence, willingness to explore, and adventurous spirit. Without a doubt, Kathy Taylor’s masterful craftsmanship is clearly shown in The Birthing House. It is a tale worth reading.

The author's voice is lyrical and captivating, as she explores grief, loss, and our human resiliency. The overlapping timelines makes for a wondrous journey. It's a magical tale, and the characters will stay with you long after...I highly recommend this gorgeous novel.

I loved Taylor’s book a lot! The writer has such an acute understanding of human experiences. She weaves love, loss, joy and despair into a huge human life tapestry that tells how we overcome these different experiences. There is a theme of refugees and their losses and also war stories from a birthing house in Germany where the writer lived for some time. Taylor involves readers in the process of writing her book. I found it very fascinating to learn how the book is birthed, developed, how her dreams and stories are woven together into making a book. Her book has many layers and requires a reader’s attention to discover them and their meanings. When you finish the book, you will feel you have a more enhanced understanding of humans. A gift.

I can't recommend this book enough, written by a dear college mentor and favorite professor of Spanish, Kathy Taylor. She takes you in a magical way to a special place over different times, and meets extraordinary people and their intertwining lives. It's a beautiful adventure.
